Thinking about opening a precious metals IRA? It’s a sensible way to diversify for retirement, but choosing the right partner can be tricky. The market is crowded and the promises are big.
SD Bullion is often mentioned among the top names, touting “best prices” and strong service. Is it truly worth your money and trust? The only way to judge is to examine its products, pricing, service, and support end to end.
With more than two decades investing in bullion and gold IRAs, I’ve put SD Bullion under the microscope so you don’t have to.
Below I share what my research and personal experience uncovered. If you’re weighing up whether SD Bullion is the right fit for your needs, read on.
SD Bullion: Quick Overview

Founded in 2012, SD Bullion operates an online secondary market for gold, silver, platinum, palladium and copper. The “SD” nods to “Silver Doctors”, and the company is led by Dr Tyler Wall. It’s a contender for cost-conscious investors thanks to consistently sharp pricing and frequent specials.
If you’re hunting for some of the keenest bullion prices, SD Bullion is frequently in the mix. After assessing many providers that load on mark-ups, I found SD’s pricing genuinely competitive in practice.
Beyond pricing, the catalogue spans both domestic and international products — including popular British gold coins — which broadens your options.
In my view, this breadth of inventory, paired with low premiums, is a big reason SD Bullion has become a familiar name among bullion buyers.
The Best Gold IRA Companies in 2025
Before we dive deeper, I’ve reviewed dozens of precious metal IRA providers over the years and narrowed them down to the top five for 2025. It’s worth reading that shortlist before proceeding with any rollover or transfer.
My current #1 is Augusta Precious Metals for its A+ BBB rating, hundreds of five-star reviews, and lifetime account support. See my full Augusta review, or head to the official Augusta website to learn more.
What Sets SD Bullion Apart?
SD Bullion is known for a wide selection of bullion at sharp prices. But does that alone make it a standout precious metals IRA partner? Not quite. From my experience, several features lift it above many peers:
Precious Metals Range
Echoing a Trustpilot customer whose “passion in life is coins”, SD Bullion’s catalogue is genuinely extensive. You’ll find coins, bars, rounds and more across major metals, making it easy to match your strategy and budget.
Here are the primary categories I found while browsing the site:
- Silver: Coins, bars, rounds, starter packs, new releases, IRA-approved silver, and more.
- Gold: Coins, bars, foil notes, new releases, and IRA-approved gold.
- Platinum: Coins, bars, and IRA-approved platinum.
- Palladium: Bars and coins.
- Copper: Bars and rounds.
- Jewellery: Pendants, bangles, earrings, chains, and rings.
- Accessories: Coin capsules, tubes and monster boxes, Sigma Metalytics scanners, and other coin accessories.
- MintCertified: MintCertified gold and silver coins.
Live Spot Prices

One feature I rate highly is SD Bullion’s live spot price board, refreshing roughly every 10–15 seconds. Taking advantage of a brief dip, I picked up some gold and silver coins.
Even though I paid by paper cheque via US Mail, the order was locked at the live price at placement. Once my payment cleared, the order shipped promptly, and I could track progress until delivery.
That experience reinforced SD Bullion’s commitment to sharp pricing, whether you’re buying for direct delivery or through an IRA.
Depository Service
Secure storage is critical for any gold IRA. SD Bullion offers access to SD Depository, a non-government facility providing segregated storage — a must-have in my view.
All assets held there are insured by Lloyd’s of London, which adds confidence. If you’re buying outside an IRA and want storage, SD Depository includes the first three months free.
“Sell To Us” Buyback
SD Bullion also runs a buyback program — something not all precious metals providers offer. They purchase specific products with minimums of:
- 20 ounces of silver
- 1 ounce of gold
- 1 ounce of platinum
- 1 ounce of palladium
I sold around 20 ounces of gold: locked the sale at spot after speaking with the team, shipped to their facility, and received payment after a three-business-day authenticity check. Straightforward and efficient.
Educational Resources
SD Bullion’s education hub covers fundamentals, market news, common scams, and price outlooks for gold and silver. Even as a seasoned investor, I found the materials current and useful for refining decisions.
How to Invest with SD Bullion

From my own account setup, SD’s team provided step-by-step guidance. Here’s how the process typically works:
Step 1: Open a Self-Directed IRA
To hold metals in an IRA, you’ll need a self-directed account per IRS rules. I supplied the requested details, and the representative handled the account creation.
Step 2: Fund the Account
Choose from cheque, bank transfer, or a rollover from an existing IRA/401(k). I opted for a 401(k) rollover; SD coordinated directly with my plan administrator to complete it.
Step 3: Purchase IRA-Approved Metals
Once funded, I selected IRA-approved products from SD’s listings. After settlement, the metals were moved to SD Depository. I could monitor holdings online and arrange physical distribution when eligible.
SD Bullion Fees
While SD shines in many areas, fee transparency isn’t its strongest suit. Storage starts from $9.99 per month, but details around IRA setup and ongoing admin weren’t clearly listed on the site — I only confirmed them by speaking with a representative.
SD Bullion Rating on Consumer Review Sites
| Consumer Protection Agency | Rating | Number of Reviews | Complaints in Past 12 Months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Better Business Bureau (BBB) | A+ | 1,332 | 55 complaints closed |
| Business Consumer Alliance (BCA) | CC | 1 | 0 |
| TrustPilot | 4.1/5 | 2,323 | 252 reviews that are below 4-star |
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Strong online reputation with thousands of positive reviews
- Competitive pricing on bullion
- Large variety of products available to purchase
- All purchases are insured
- Sell-back option available at live spot (eligible items)
Cons
- Shipping limited to the US and select international destinations
- No live chat support on the website
The Verdict
SD Bullion delivers on sharp pricing, breadth of choice, helpful support, secure storage, a straightforward sell-back pathway, and a simple three-step IRA setup.
The main caveat is limited fee transparency for IRA setup and maintenance, plus the absence of live chat. If these aren’t deal-breakers, SD Bullion is a solid candidate. As always, match any provider against your own objectives and preferences. For alternatives, see my roundup of the best gold IRA companies.
